Isaiah tells us that the Messiah would be “acquainted with grief” and that “surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows” (Isaiah 53:3-4). Although perfect and without sin, in his mortal life Jesus experienced the feelings of grief common to us all. And in some way unfathomable to mortal minds, the Savior descended below all and suffered the pains, sorrows, sicknesses, and suffering of all of God’s children, as well as their sins. I did this painting–with its layered textures and scratches and colors–to represent that divine grief, and to remind us that God intimately feels with us in our times of difficulty.
