Jesus of Nazareth

This is an attempt at a portrait of Jesus of Nazareth, informed by academic research and through consultation with scholars. I am the first to say that we don’t know what mortal Jesus looked like, but research suggests that Jewish men in first century Roman Judea were often middle height with honey or olive colored skin and shorter black hair and beards. Egyptian mummy portraits painted on coffins from the first to third century provide a good idea of this appearance. 

In my painting Jesus wears the traditional male tunic, sometimes worn over one shoulder in the working summer heat, as some early mosaics depict. Jesus was a tekton, the Greek word for a craftsman or builder, including working in stone, which most homes were made of. He stands in front of a winepress hewn in the natural Nazarene hillside bedrock, working to complete where the crushed grape juice pools below. The winepress is symbolic of his Atonement; the stone he holds of Him as our chief cornerstone upon which we build our faith; and the watchtower of his authorized servants.
